Löyly is the Finnish word for the steam and wave of heat created when water meets hot sauna stones. The water sizzles, turns to steam, and rises, wrapping you in warmth. Traditional Finnish saunas use high benches to position your feet above the stones and your body in that upper layer of heat.
It’s customary to ask before adding water—everyone in the sauna shares the löyly, and that extra warmth can feel intense.
